Writeup:

The first thing I wanted to do for this assignment was to improve on my skills as a designer. I saw that I had areas to improve from my last assignment and I put a lot of my first hours into this project working on a visually appealing design. After testing multiple designs I settled on a color palette and design that is reminiscent of an old vintage map. Visually I liked the map design a lot and I thought it fit perfectly with the game I chose, Uncharted. Uncharted is an adventure game very akin to Indiana Jones, so a map made a lot of sense. Hopefully the effort I put on my design at the start shows off.

Moving on to the interaction part of the assignment. I watched a lot of tutorials first off to learn how to work in p5.  After that I had to transfer my poster design that I made in illustrator first into p5. This took much longer than I expected because I basically had to make a png of almost every element of the poster and import into the right position in p5. That took a lot of hours mainly because I had to make sure everything lines up, like how the lines are placed on the map for example.

After thinking through what interactions I could do I thought it would be clever to reveal the map by “discovering” all 4 titles of the Uncharted series, which all culminates into the collection of Nathan Drake games. This was not my initial idea, but once I thought of it I changed the entire direction of my project. So, from there I had to write every title and every number of the game in illustrator first to get the arc effect. Then I had to transfer that too into p5 and put the images in an array that would switch what showed on the screen based on a mouse click. It took many hours to just figure out how the mouse clicking worked too. I also had to make the red connecting lines in illustrator as well and do the same thing I did for the game titles. Importing the sound/music and the hovering effect took me another day to do too. Also, making sure that the player can go through the correct titles in any order to a lot of trial and error.

Overall, I hope all the work I put into the project shows. I wanted the poster to show the culmination of the Uncharted franchise and have the player discover each game themselves, while also trying to show off my skills as a designer.

Credit:

I took sound effects from freesound.org for the switching of the titles.

I used Nate's Theme and the Uncharted Theme from Uncharted 1.

I used Among Thieves from Uncharted and A Plane to Catch from Uncharted 3.

I used Thief's End and took dialog from Uncharted 4.
